There is a consistent pattern in suburban Melo Park established by auto-garages and planning mandates (like many jurisdictions), which dictate size and placement of such spaces. The garage is a workaround issue for rethinking compact lots

The second challenge in suburban planning is that of privacy and outdoor use. Much of the yard is relegated to view from street frontage exclusively,  and utilization is limited to aesthetic buffer from street to front door. Yet, the desire to have usable outdoor space, free from prying eyes remains true for many residents

This proposal for a single-family residence rethinks lot zoning by internalizing  outdoor spaces. Private outdoor courts provide the spatial framework for planning the home. The plan revolves around how and where outdoor space is used, as much as interior program adjacencies
