SEOUL MMCA

seoul south korea

2010

The new Seoul Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art was submitted for an international design competition

The proposal is situated on the grounds of an old military compound and hospital, off limits to public access for more than half a century. Additionally, being sited next to the Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of Seoul's historic landmarks, was both opportunity and constraint. The design problem was one of reintroduction at a significant location and in a notable time of public  awakening

Our proposal presents a new public ground whereby city and museum coalesce in open public exchange. Galleries are elevated above a flexibly programmed court. Patrons are encouraged to meander through exhibits both inside and out as part of the historic neighborhood experience
